Bingham Ridge At-A-Glance

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Located in Northern Chatham County, Bingham Ridge is a new neighborhood of 39 home sites on 123 acres. The homes are ENERGY STAR® certified with active solar systems for hot water and electrical generation. Electricity generated is sold into Progress Energy’s grid and reimbursed by the NC Green Power program.

For homes on heavily wooded lots (with reduced solar access), a geothermal heating and cooling system is offered in lieu of the solar electric system.

The Craftsman style designs combine energy efficiency with gracious open floor plans to create a high performance home with seamless operation. Generous use of wood, tile and stone make the homes as beautiful  as they are efficient.

RENEWABLE ENERGY FEATURES

  • Passive Solar Design
  • Solar Hot Water System
  • Grid-tied Photovoltaic Array
  • Geothermal HVAC System
The photovoltaic electric system on the roof is grid-tied and will produce pollution-free electricity that is fed into the grid. This house is a pioneering example of "distributed generation." Excess electricity produced during the day will be bought by the local utility. The 2 kWh system offsets electricity use of the home approximately 30%.  Since this home will be a producer of clean, renewable energy, it is eligible for compensation from the NC Green Power Program as well. www.nc.greenpower.org
The photovoltaic system qualifies for both federal and North Carolina renewable energy tax credits. Federal tax credits equal 30% of the installed cost and N.C. credits equal 35% of the installed cost with a $10,500 cap.The combined credits reduce the cost of the system 65% for the first homeowner.

Solar hot water panels are more integrated than ever before, and are capable of providing up to 100% of domestic hot water requirements. The  heat exchanging medium is a glycol (anti-freeze) solution, so you never need to drain the system  during cold weather.
The solar hot water system qualifies for both federal and North Carolina renewable energy tax credits. Federal tax credits equal 30% of the installed cost and N.C. credits equal 35% of the installed cost with a $1,400 cap.The combined credits reduce the cost of the system approximately 53% for the first homeowner.

Geothermal heat pumps are more efficient than air based heat pumps because
they extract energy from the constant temperature of the earth to condition the air in a home. In this sense, geothermal is a partially-renewable form of energy. The geothermal system qualifies for both federal and North Carolina renewable energy tax credits. Federal tax credits equal 30% of the installed cost and N.C. credits equal 35% of the installed cost with an $8,400 cap.The combined credits reduce the cost of the system approximately 59% for the first homeowner.
